Union Flag List

UNITED STATES ARMY

ARTILLERY: The artillery batteries usually carried a swallow tail stars and stripes flag with the battery designating letter in the canton. The national and regimental flags were infantry size and usually stayed with the regimental commander. Late in the war some artillery regiments were converted to infantry and they took the field with their national and yellow regimental flags.

Just designated which battery you want.

CAVALRY: The cavalry was authorized the blue regimental flag only (no stars and stripes) thru out the entire war. The Stars and Stripes was not authorized to be carried by cavalry regiments until 1871. In early 1863 the cavalry troop flags changed from red over white swallow tail to stars and stripes swallow tail and then changed back after the war. If you want swallow tail troop flag for your cavalry just designate which type and troop letter.

INFANTRY: Authorized a 6? x 6.5? national (stars and stripes) and the same size blue regimental (white in Massachusetts). In many cases it is difficult to match pairs of flags for a regiment because most regiments received more than one pair of flags during the war and in some cases received individual flags rather than a pair. Also, the historical research has not been done by some states to be able to match the flags. Some states preservation of their flags is just beginning and therefore getting information on those flags is difficult. Last, information for many of the flags simply did not survive the war. I will do my best give you matching pairs but in many cases it will be best guess. If you have more information than me please write and we will do what we can.

Caution when picking flags from the websites. West Virginia was admitted to the Union in mid 1863, causing another star to be added to the flags (35 total) that were ordered after Gettysburg. If you want flag for early war they need to be 34 stars.
